Verizon Wireless is the nation's leading provider of wireless communications. The company has the largest nationwide wireless voice and data network and 34.6 million customers. Headquartered in Bedminster, NJ, Verizon Wireless is a joint venture of Verizon Communications (NYSE:VZ) and Vodafone (NYSE and LSE: VOD).

Taking a stand
As the largest carrier in the U.S wireless industry, Verizon Wireless has taken a leadership role and set standards for addressing issues surrounding the industry. We are mindful of the impact that wireless technology has on our communities and respond with programs that help our customers use wireless services to their best advantage.

One of our main focuses is responsible driving. Download our Safe Driving guide for more information about how you can be a part of the solution.

We have also created the vehicle Intelligence Quest or vIQsm program - it's a unique educational package that encourages new motorists to consider their driving aptitude and educates them about the options for using wireless technologies in vehicles. See the separate vIQ website for more information(and, if you educate new drivers, to order your free vIQ kit).

Through the cellular Telecommunications and Internet Association or CTIA, you'll find useful brochures on wireless phones and driving safely. This organization presents wireless phone customers with VITA Awards for the use of phones in emergency situations. See the separate CTIA website for more information.

Please read more about our programs or find related press releases in the News Center.

Verizon Wireless was formed by the merger of Bell Atlantic Mobile, Vodafone/Airtouch Cellular, GTE Wireless and PrimeCo. Most of their territory employs CDMA digital technology, in both the cellular and PCS bands. They also own significant analog networks. They are currently upgrading their digital networks to the cdma2000 1xRTT 3G standard.

Help Wanted: Verizon Wireless

Would-be wireless workers in Houston should listen for the sound of opportunity ringing.

Verizon Wireless is looking to hire new people before the New Year. This is in response to expected high holiday sales and the increased customer activity that will be created by the local number portability that goes into effect this month.

That new regulation, mandated by the FCC, will allow customers to keep their existing wireless phone numbers even if they switch carriers.

So what does it take to work for Verizon, and what can you expect in return?

"Knowledge of the wireless industry and wireless phones is helpful, computer skills are very helpful. The most important thing is customer service skills and a smile, the right attitude," said Verizon spokesperson Macy Bodenhamer. "Verizon wireless offers a very competitive salary package, as well as, extensive benefits, 401K, investment plans, as well as wireless discounts."

Verizon is the largest wireless phone company in the country, and it has about 1,750 employees right here in Houston.

Before the new year, the company plans to hire about 250 new wireless workers, and most of them will work in customer service.

About 45 others will be hired for sales, in addition to those hired for customer service and technical support teams.

Tiffany Cooper is going through training at Verizon headquarters.

"But I've been very impressed. And the coaching and feedback is great because I always know, you know, what's expected of me and what I'm doing and what I can improve upon. So, I love it. I would definitely encourage other people to apply to Verizon Wireless, it's a very good company," said Cooper.

And it's a company that will continue to expand.

"We're really excited to be able to create these new positions -- 250 new employees. We're continuing to grow. We really recognize the value of our existing employees, and we're ready to tap into the additional talent pool that's here in Houston," said Bodenhamer.

Cingular is another wireless company that's hiring for the holidays in Houston. They'll be making about 200 new hires before the new year.
