AT&T Wireless to Cut Jobs
AT&T Wireless is cutting 1,900 jobs to lower its operating costs, the Redmond-based mobile telecommunications carrier said in regulatory filings Friday. The company had said previously announced plans to cut staff this year, but had not given an actual number. The cuts are designed to help AT&T Wireless achieve the best operating margins in the wireless industry by 2005.
AT&T Wireless (NYSE: AWE) is the second-largest wireless carrier,
based on revenues, in the United States.
With 21.49 million subscribers as of June 30, 2003, and revenues of more
than $16.2 billion over the past four quarters, AT&T Wireless
delivers advanced high-quality mobile wireless communications services,
voice and data, to businesses and consumers, in the U.S. and
internationally.
AT&T Wireless has significant analog networks, and digital TDMA
networks. They also recently rolled out a new nationwide GSM network
over their existing TDMA network. The new network features GPRS
technology for high-speed data services. The GSM/GPRS network will be
upgraded to EDGE in 2003, followed by UMTS, as AT&T's 3G upgrade
strategy. The TDMA network will still continue to operate for several
years.

and a compatible GSM/GPRS or multi-band device are required. Suspension
or cancellation of your voice rate plan will automatically terminate
your data services. Upon termination of data service all stored
information will be deleted within 30 days of cancellation.

radio transmission limitations caused by system capacity, system repairs
and modifications, your equipment, terrain, signal strength, weather and
other conditions. All IP addresses will be assigned dynamically per
session from a private pool and not all protocols will be supported.
