Apple's Xserve G5 and the QuickTime software will be used to
deliver multimedia video streaming capabilities to Sprint's
PCS network.
Apple's QuickTime technology, for example, will be used
by developers to encode audio and the video for the PCS Vision
Multimedia Service. "The combination of Xserve G5 and the
QuickTime's standards-based multimedia architecture gives
Sprint's content partners powerful tools to create and
deliver professional content," Philip Schiller, Apple's
senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, said
in a statement.
The software will be used by content providers as a
mobile multimedia delivery platform for Sprint's PCS Vision
Multimedia Services, a new streaming audio and the video
service.
The PCS Vision Multimedia Service includes content from
CNN, NBC, Universal, FOX Sports, The Weather Channel, E!
Entertainment, mFlix, Twentieth Century Fox, AccuWeather and the
1KTV. PCS Vision customers with select handsets can
subscribe to the service for as little as $9.99 a month.
